Amazon Affiliate Marketing Analysis (Commission Rates and Sales Strategy)
On the blog I run at WPlaybook, which shares tips about living in the U.S., I recently set up Amazon affiliate marketing for the first time—and even made my first sale. I plan to observe the results a bit longer before posting a full review, but I wanted to share some insights and strategies I’ve learned while setting up and operating the program.
Amazon Affiliate Marketing
Before sharing my experience with Amazon affiliate marketing, let’s first understand what Amazon affiliate marketing is. In Korea, a similar service is called Coupang Partners.
What is Amazon Affiliate Marketing?
Amazon Affiliate Marketing is a program where affiliates earn commissions by promoting and driving sales of Amazon products. Affiliates—such as bloggers or YouTubers—share Amazon product links on their websites, blogs, or social media channels. When consumers purchase products through these affiliate links, the affiliates receive a percentage of the sale as commission. Amazon uses unique tracking codes to monitor and manage each affiliate’s sales performance. This program is easy to join and allows affiliates to promote a wide variety of products, making it popular among many content creators.
Amazon Affiliate Commission Rates
As mentioned earlier, when readers visit your blog and make a purchase through your affiliate links, you earn a share of the revenue. The commission rate varies depending on the category of the product purchased.
The commission rates for each of the major categories are as follows
| Product categories | Fixed commission rate |
|---|---|
| Amazon Games | 20.00 |
| Luxury Beauty (Luxury Beauty, Luxury Stores Beauty, Amazon Explore) | 10.00 |

Recommended Categories and Top Brands
When considering Amazon affiliate marketing, it’s not necessary to focus only on categories with the highest commission rates. The key is to find a niche that fits your blog’s theme and audience. For example, if you choose to promote Amazon Games with a 20% commission rate, your entire blog should focus on game reviews and related content.
It’s important to select product categories that suit your interests and have strong sales potential. Ideally, these categories should offer a good commission rate and have steady demand in the market.
Generally, the following five categories are popular and lucrative:
Luxury Beauty – 10% Commission
The luxury beauty market has consistent demand, and high-end beauty products offer attractive commissions. Amazon’s luxury beauty category includes many premium brands. Here are some representative brands and products:
Featured brands and products
- Dr. Barbara Sturm: zIt’s a brand known for its high-end skincare products.
- RéVive: Offers skincare products with anti-aging and regenerative properties.
- Monpure: A luxury brand that specializes in scalp and hair care.
- vVARDIS: Sells premium products for teeth whitening and oral care.

Digital Music, Physical Music, Handmade, Digital Video – 5% Commission
Handmade products are popular among consumers looking for unique items. Digital music and video content have steady demand as well. Representative products include:
- Digital music: Amazon Music Unlimited subscriptions and MP3 downloads
- Physical Music: For example, Taylor Swift’s Midnights CD and Adele’s 30 album
- Handmade Products: Unique handcrafted jewelry and customized home decor items
- Digital Video: Prime Video subscriptions for streaming the latest movies and TV series
Physical Books, Kitchenware, and Automotive Products – 4.5% Commission
Physical books still have a large reader base. Bestsellers on Amazon can generate very high sales volume, and even titles in the top 100 can sell steadily each week. A niche blog that curates and recommends bestselling books can be a strong affiliate model.

Kitchenware is an essential item used daily, so it has steady demand. Kitchen products also tend to have good individual sale prices and attractive commissions. The brands are great too! We already have Instant Pot and KitchenAid in our home, haha. It would be a good idea to target these as a niche market and run a blog focused on them.
Representative Kitchenware Brands
- Instant Pot: A multi-function pressure cooker that has become a must-have in many kitchens.
- KitchenAid Stand Mixer: A mixer essential for baking and cooking, consistently popular.
- Le Creuset: Known for its high-quality kitchenware with strong sales.
Automotive Products are popular for maintenance and upgrades.
Representative Automotive Brands
- Meguiar’s Car Care Products: Popular products for car cleaning and maintenance.
- Bosch Automotive Parts: Offers a wide range of auto parts with strong sales.
- Michelin Tires: Chosen by many consumers for safety and durability.
In the US, tires are sold online as well… Wow. Tires cost over $200 each, and since people usually replace more than one at a time, the commission potential is really lucrative.

Amazon Fashion – 4% Commission
Amazon Fashion is a highly popular category with substantial sales volume. Amazon holds about 11.5% of the US apparel market share, demonstrating significant revenue. The category enjoys steady growth in sales, being popular among a wide range of consumers across different age groups and income levels.
I found that many well-known brands we’re familiar with are sold on Amazon, making it a good opportunity for affiliate marketing.
Representative Brands in Amazon Fashion
- Levi’s: Famous for denim and casual wear.
- Calvin Klein: Known for modern apparel and accessories.
- Columbia: Outdoor and sports apparel.
- Adidas: Sportswear and sneakers.
- The Drop: Amazon’s own brand reflecting the latest fashion trends.
These brands boast high sales volumes within the Amazon Fashion category and are popular among diverse customer segments.

Toys, Furniture, Household Items, Headphones, Beauty Products, Musical Instruments, Business & Industrial Supplies, Outdoor Gear, Tools, Sports Equipment, Baby Products – 3% Commission
Toys and baby products are items that parents always need. Furniture and household items have high demand as they relate to home decoration. Headphones, beauty products, and sports equipment consistently sell well across diverse consumer groups.
Although this category has a low commission rate, these are products people need to buy regularly, so the sales volume is significantly higher than other categories. Also, if you recommend a comprehensive list of essential baby products, for example, grouping many items together, the total sales amount is likely to increase.
Affiliate marketing strategies
If you think of a typical affiliate marketing strategy, it might look something like this!
Blog post
A typical example of Amazon affiliate marketing is blog posts featuring various product reviews and recommendations. These blog posts include detailed descriptions of each product along with images, naturally incorporating Amazon product links. For instance, in an article titled “Top Blenders of 2024,” the performance and features of each blender are compared, while providing Amazon links to make it easy for readers to purchase.
YouTube videos
YouTube videos are an effective way to utilize Amazon affiliate marketing through unboxing and review content of specific products. The videos explain the pros and cons in detail, and Amazon product links can be included in the video description for viewers who want more information. For example, in a “Latest Smartphone Unboxing and Review” video, the features and performance of the phone are demonstrated, and viewers can easily navigate to the product page through links in the description if they want to buy it.

Social media (SNS)
Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter can be used for Amazon affiliate marketing by posting product introductions. These posts include product photos, relevant hashtags, and affiliate links to encourage followers to make purchases. For example, on Instagram, a post titled “Must-Have Summer Items” can showcase various summer products with links to each item to boost sales.
Email marketing
Amazon affiliate marketing can be conducted by including recommended products and affiliate links in newsletters sent to subscribers. The newsletter provides product links along with discount information to make it easy for subscribers to purchase. For instance, a newsletter titled “Best Deals This Week” might include images and discount details for each product, along with links directing to the Amazon product pages.
Website banner ads
Affiliate marketing can be done by placing Amazon product banner ads in the sidebar or header of a personal blog or website. These banners link directly to Amazon product pages when clicked, helping visitors easily buy the products. For example, placing a “Best Seller Books Recommendation” banner on the blog’s sidebar allows visitors to click and purchase the recommended books on Amazon.
SEO-optimized content
Writing SEO-optimized posts using keywords like “Best Product Recommendations” is another way to perform Amazon affiliate marketing. Such posts introduce various products and naturally include product links to rank higher in search engines. For example, an article titled “Top Self-Interior Hammers of 2024” compares different hammer products and provides Amazon links so readers can easily purchase them.
Recommended WordPress Plugins for Affiliate Marketing
After running affiliate marketing for a while, I realized there are just too many links everywhere. Also, affiliate links can change depending on the program! So, for those planning to run an affiliate marketing blog using WordPress, I’d like to recommend two affiliate link management plugins that work well with Amazon.
- Thirsty Affiliate (specializes in link management) – about $10 per month
- Lasso (link management + product display + unified dashboard) – about $30,000 per month
Thirsty Affiliate: Affiliate Link Management Plugin
Thirsty Affiliate was the plugin I used during the early stages of running the WPlaybook blog. It helps manage affiliate marketing effectively with features like automatic link insertion and click tracking. There are both free and paid versions, and the differences are as follows:
| Features | Free version | Paid version |
|---|---|---|
| Manage and shorten links | ✅ ✅ | ✅ ✅ |
| Click statistics | ✅ ✅ | ✅ + Advanced statistics and reports |
| Categorizing links | ✅ ✅ | ✅ ✅ |
| Automatic keyword link insertion | ❌ | ✅ ✅ |
| Targeting links by geographic location | ❌ | ✅ ✅ |
| Automatic link checking and updating | ❌ | ✅ ✅ |
| Amazon API integration | ❌ | ✅ ✅ |
| Backup and recovery features | ❌ | ✅ ✅ |
Amazon API Integration Feature
One of the paid features of Thirsty Affiliate is Amazon API integration. This feature allows you to search for Amazon products directly within WordPress and simultaneously generate images and affiliate links. It’s very useful for managing Amazon affiliate marketing. The basic plan costs $99 per year, which works out to about 10,000 KRW per month.
Lasso Affiliate Management Plugin
Lasso is the affiliate link management plugin currently used by WPlaybook. As WPlaybook grew, we joined over 10 affiliate programs, making it difficult to track affiliate revenue coming from multiple sources. So, we switched to Lasso, which allows centralized management of affiliate links from various programs. Like Thirsty Affiliate, it offers link cloaking, but a standout feature is that it provides various templates for product displays, as shown below.
The cheapest plan costs $24 per month, which is more expensive than Thirsty Affiliate, but you can expect higher click-through rates in return.
In Conclusion
Amazon affiliate marketing targets a global market, so the potential is truly vast. By finding your own niche and managing it well, I believe you can create an additional revenue pipeline for your blog.
