Create Blog Thumbnails in 1 Minute with ChatGPT’s Image Generation [No Copyright Worries]
One of the most frequently asked questions in the WPlaybook community is how I create such clean thumbnails using ChatGPT. By using ChatGPT’s image generation feature, you can easily create thumbnails without worrying about copyright issues — which is a big plus when applying for AdSense approval. Today, I’m revealing the method I usually keep to myself for generating clean, professional thumbnails with ChatGPT.
The Importance of Blog Thumbnails
A thumbnail is the face of a blog post. Just as a person’s appearance completes their fashion, a blog’s thumbnail has a surprisingly strong impact. In my opinion, the three most important ways thumbnails influence a blog are as follows:
Increased Click-Through Rates (CTR)
A blog thumbnail is one of the first impressions visitors get. Since it’s the first visual cue people see before deciding to click on your post, an attractive and visually engaging thumbnail can encourage clicks. This plays a key role in boosting your blog’s click-through rate.
Brand Consistency
Thumbnails also play a crucial role in maintaining brand consistency. Using a consistent design, color scheme, and style helps visitors quickly recognize and remember your blog. This not only builds trust in your brand but also helps grow a loyal readership over time.
Thumbnails in search results

Lastly, thumbnails can also influence SEO. When a thumbnail appears alongside your post in search engine results, a visually appealing image can drive higher click-through rates, ultimately increasing site traffic. For example, in the Google search result above, the thumbnail that mentions “America’s top motion sickness medicine” clearly makes it more likely that users will click on the post.
In conclusion, blog thumbnails are not just a visual element—they are a strategic component that plays a critical role in a blog’s success.
Creating Thumbnails Using ChatGPT’s Image Feature
One of the most impressive features available in ChatGPT 4.0 is the ability to generate images using DALL·E 2. Did you know that with ChatGPT, you can easily create blog thumbnails—without any copyright concerns?
Examples of Thumbnails Made with ChatGPT’s Image Feature
Now, let me show you some high-quality thumbnails I’ve crafted using ChatGPT’s image generation tool.
If you like the thumbnail style I’ve created, you’ll want to stick around for the next few posts 🙂
3 Essential Tips for Creating Thumbnails with ChatGPT’s Image Feature
Here are the three tips I use when creating thumbnails with ChatGPT.
- There are magic words that determine the thumbnail style.
- Draw a thumbnail with the letters removed.
- Enter and draw the photo itself.
Let’s take a look at them one by one.
Prompts to Define the Art Style
Using ChatGPT’s image generation feature is really simple—you just ask ChatGPT 4.0 to draw a picture. However, there are some “magic words” you need to include in your prompt when requesting an image. Using these well will help you create thumbnails that are either higher quality or have more distinctive characteristics.
Popular Prompts for Defining Art Styles
Below are some commonly used prompts that can help you specify popular art styles when using ChatGPT’s image generation feature.
| Styles | Prompt wording |
|---|---|
| Realism Style | “Keep your drawing realistic. Emphasize natural colors and fine details.” |
| Abstraction Styles | “I want you to draw in an abstract style, using contrasts of color and distortions of form.” |
| Cartoon Style | “I want you to draw it in a cartoon style, use bright colors and exaggerated features.” |
| Watercolor Style | “Give your drawing a watercolor feel. Use soft colors and blurry boundaries.” |
| Oil Painting Styles | “Draw in an oil painting style. Please use thick brushstrokes and rich colors.” |
| Pen and Ink Styles | “Please draw in a pen and ink style. Emphasize crisp lines and contrast.” |
| Minimalist style | “Draw a picture in a minimalist style. Keep it simple, using simple shapes and colors.” |
| Retro Style | “I want you to draw in a retro style. Please use vintage colors and design elements.” |
| Pixel Art Style | “I want you to draw a picture in a pixel art style, please compose the picture with small square pixels.” |
| Sketch styles | “Please draw in a sketchy style. Please use a pencil look.” |
I often use one special prompt—my “magic phrase”—which is minimal line drawing. This phrase helps create the kind of illustration style you saw in the examples earlier.
No text inside the images
While ChatGPT’s image generation can add text inside pictures, it’s usually not very accurate. So, I always include the instruction “do not include any text in the image” in my prompts. It’s much more efficient to add any text, speech bubbles, or logos later using a tool like Canva.
For example, in the two thumbnails below, all the speech bubbles, text, and logos were added afterward in Canva.
Uploading Your Desired Image
In the past, when using ChatGPT’s image generation, you had to describe exactly what you wanted in detail through prompts, which was quite cumbersome. But recently, you don’t have to do that anymore. You can simply upload the image itself and ask it to create a similar drawing, and it will produce something very close to the original.
While you can use royalty-free images found via search, many people worry that those images have already been widely used by other blogs. In such cases, you can recreate a similar vibe by using the uploaded image along with the prompt styles we discussed earlier.
Below is an example: on the left is a photo downloaded from Unsplash (Photo by Andy Kelly on Unsplash), and on the right is a thumbnail recreated using ChatGPT’s image generation feature.
How about it? The concept is exactly the same, but it created a completely new image with a different vibe, right? And all I did was use this simple prompt: hehe
“Using the provided image, create a 16:9 thumbnail in a minimal line drawing style.”
As you can see in the prompt, you can also set the desired thumbnail ratio. Just adjust it to your liking.
