Why You Should Never Neglect Core Web Vitals
After putting in a ton of effort to build up traffic for my blog (StatisticsPlaybook) WordPress site, I suddenly saw everything crash—and that painful experience taught me a lesson I never want to forget. So I’m writing it down here as a reminder. They say, “Know your enemy and know yourself,” so let’s start by understanding what Core Web Vitals are. Let’s go.
What Are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are a set of performance metrics introduced by Google in 2020 to evaluate user experience on web pages. These metrics specifically measure how users perceive the performance of a website, focusing on load speed, interactivity, and visual stability.
There are three key Core Web Vitals metrics:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
Measures the loading performance of a web page by tracking the time it takes for the largest visible content (like a hero image or text block) to appear on screen.
Good score: Under 2.5 seconds - First Input Delay (FID)
Measures the responsiveness of a web page. It’s the time from when a user first interacts (e.g., clicking a link or button) to the time the browser starts processing that interaction.
Good score: Under 100 milliseconds - Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
Measures visual stability. It tracks how much elements on the page shift unexpectedly during loading.
Good score: Less than 0.1
These three metrics are critical guidelines for improving user experience and are now officially part of Google’s SEO ranking criteria. If your site scores poorly in any of these areas, not only can your Google ranking drop, but users may also leave due to a frustrating experience.

In the screenshot from Google PageSpeed Insights, the first three metrics you see are the Core Web Vitals. My site, Smart Statistics Life, failed the test due to poor CLS, which means my Core Web Vitals were broken—causing serious SEO consequences.
2024 Update

Broken Core Web Vitals and a Sharp Decline in Visitors
StatisticsPlaybook didn’t start off with poor Core Web Vitals. In fact, I had put considerable effort into SEO, and the site initially maintained a “Passed” status for Core Web Vitals during the early stages of its WordPress development.
However, starting October 23, things took a turn. All URLs on the site were flagged for Core Web Vitals violations. In the chart below, you’ll see a sharp rise in yellow URLs (Needs Improvement) marked by the red arrow—these used to be green URLs (Good), which meant they met Google’s performance standards.
At the time, I didn’t fully grasp what this shift meant. But when I saw a sudden drop in site visitors, the realization hit hard.


The biggest impact I noticed? Google Discover exposure.
When most URLs were rated “Good,” my posts regularly appeared on Google Discover with little effort. But once the Core Web Vitals fell apart, my content no longer got picked up—even when I published quality articles.

What is Google Discover?
Google Discover is a service from Google that automatically recommends personalized content based on your search history, interests, and more, allowing you to discover relevant content without having to type in specific search terms.
For those of you who blog on Naver or Tstory, you may not know what Google Discover is, but it’s easy to think of it as It’s easy to think of it as exposure to the main page of Naver.
I believe that Google Discover is the best way for a small blog or website to grow quickly in the early days, but I’ve come to the conclusion that in order to take advantage of this feature, you’ll need to keep your core web vitals PASS with a full suite of SEO methods.
Identifying the Cause of the Breakdown
The collapse in my Core Web Vitals score was primarily due to a failed CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) metric. And the culprit? Google AdSense Auto Ads—which I had enabled without much thought.
Let this be a lesson: Never apply Auto Ads without testing their impact!
After significant trial and error, I was finally able to restore the CLS score. As shown in the image below, the CLS score for the original post is now back to 0.0, meaning there are no layout shifts—great news.

How Long Does It Take to Recover Core Web Vitals?
Even after fixing the issues, it takes about a month for those improvements to be reflected in Google’s systems.
Why does it take so long for changes to impact search results?
Here are the 3 main reasons:

- Data Accumulation & Processing
Google relies on real-user data (field data) to evaluate web performance. While data is collected continuously, Google waits until it accumulates a sufficient amount to make a statistically valid judgment—typically over 28 days. - I ndex Refresh Cycle
Any changes to your website must go through crawling and indexing processes. Although automated, these still take time, depending on your crawl budget and update frequency. - Stability & Consistency
Google doesn’t want search rankings to fluctuate based on temporary performance spikes. Instead, it waits to ensure your site’s performance is consistently stable before updating rankings.
In this post, we explored why maintaining healthy Core Web Vitals from the beginning is crucial, and what kind of consequences you might face if things go wrong.
