Rank Math SEO Ultimate Guide: The 2026 Beginner’s Roadmap to Google Rankings
Now that you’ve finished setting up your WordPress blog, the first step is content creation. But when writing, the most critical goal is getting your posts to rank high on Google, right? This is where the Rank Math SEO plugin comes in, handling the core of On-Page SEO. This post covers every single requirement to meet the Rank Math SEO score criteria without missing a beat. Let’s master how to use this tool and take your first step toward Google SEO optimization!
How to Use Rank Math SEO: The Ultimate Powerhouse
When discussing the most famous WordPress SEO plugins, two names always come up: Yoast and Rank Math. If you’re unsure what SEO is or why it matters, please check out WPlaybook‘s guide to SEO (Search Engine Optimization)!
SEO techniques include keyword optimization, high-quality content creation, link building, and technical website optimization. Among these, you can think of Rank Math SEO as a plugin that truly excels in On-Page SEO (keyword optimization).
Personally, I have used Rank Math for a long time and highly recommend it. In fact, we have configured WPlaybook’s “ALL100” theme—used for initial setups—to automatically install the Rank Math plugin for you.
I’ll save the reasons why WPlaybook chose Rank Math over Yoast for a future post. Today, let’s focus on how to install the plugin and master how to use Rank Math SEO.
Installing the Rank Math SEO Plugin
If you are using the ALL100 theme, the Rank Math plugin is automatically installed, so you do not need to install it separately. However, for those not using this theme, simply go to the Plugins section, search for Rank Math, and click Install and Activate.
- Plugins > Add New Plugin > Search “Rank Math” > Install Now > Activate

Rank Math SEO Initial Setup
For the initial setup guide, please refer to the video below starting at 9:07. I will update this post with a detailed written guide later!
I will add more detailed instructions later!
⚠️ Important: If you encounter a PHP MBstring error during setup, please check the solution at the bottom of this post before proceeding.
How to Use Rank Math When Writing Posts
Rank Math SEO offers excellent On-Page SEO features designed to help your posts rank at the top of Google for your target keywords.
Opening the Rank Math Menu
On the Block Editor screen (which appears after you click ‘Add New Post’), click the green button in the top right corner to open the menu.

How to Set a Focus Keyword
Setting a focus keyword is simple. You just need to enter the primary keyword you want to emphasize for your post into the Focus Keyword section.
In the example below, “Hyperlipidemia” has been set as the main keyword, along with related keywords like “Hyperlipidemia Symptoms” and “Hyperlipidemia Causes.”

Configuring the Primary Focus Keyword
You will notice a star mark in front of the first keyword (“Hyperlipidemia”). This marks it as the Primary Focus Keyword.
This means that the score criteria, which we will look at later, are evaluated based on this main keyword first.
Understanding Rank Math Scoring Elements
The Rank Math score indicates how well your blog post is optimized for search engines regarding a specific keyword.
While the Rank Math SEO score does not guarantee absolute search rankings, it checks essential optimization factors in real-time. This makes it an incredibly helpful guide when writing your blog posts.
How to Use the Rank Math Score Guide
Below is a summary of the “Red Light” error messages for each section. You can click on any message to jump directly to the solution paragraph (how to turn the light green).
- Basic SEO Errors
- Additional SEO Errors
- Focus Keyword not found in subheadings like H2, H3, H4, etc.
- Add an image with your Focus Keyword as alt text.
- Keyword Density is 0. Aim for around 1% Keyword Density.
- URL is [x] characters long. Consider shortening it.
- Link out to external resources.
- Add a DoFollow link to external resources.
- Add internal links to your content.
- You haven’t used this Focus Keyword before.
- Use Content AI to optimize the post.
- Title Readability Errors
- Content Readability Errors
Basic SEO
The Basic SEO section consists of the following 6 requirements:
- Focus Keyword in the Title: Does the Focus Keyword appear in the SEO Title?
- Focus Keyword in Meta Description: Is the Focus Keyword included in the SEO Meta Description?
- Focus Keyword in URL: Does the URL contain the Focus Keyword?
- Focus Keyword in Introduction: Does the Focus Keyword appear in the first 10% of the content?
- Focus Keyword in Content: Is the Focus Keyword found anywhere in the post content?
- Content Length: Is the content at least 600 words long?
Let’s dive into my personal insights and tips for each of these items!
Focus Keyword in the Title
The specific check items related to this section are as follows:
Focus Keyword not found in your SEO Title.
Hurray! You’re using the Focus Keyword in the SEO Title.
In short, the exact word or phrase you set as the Focus Keyword must be included in the post title exactly as is.
For example, let’s say I set the Focus Keyword for this post as “rank math seo”. Therefore, this exact keyword must appear in the title, right?

Once you set your title like this, the Green Checkmark will appear.
Focus Keyword in Meta Description
The specific check items related to this section are as follows:
Focus Keyword not found in your SEO Meta Description.
Focus Keyword used in the SEO Meta Description.
To understand this, you simply need to know what an “SEO Meta Description” is. The goal is easy: just include the word you set as your Focus Keyword inside that description!
You can find the SEO Meta Description field within the Snippet Editor. To open it, simply click the blue “Edit Snippet” button located in the Rank Math plugin menu.

The Description field located at the very bottom of the Snippet Editor is the SEO Meta Description. This is the text snippet that appears right underneath your title in Google search results.
💡 Important Tip: One crucial thing to note is that Rank Math automatically fetches the first paragraph of your post to fill this section.
Therefore, you don’t necessarily need to edit the snippet manually. Instead, simply ensure you include your Focus Keyword within the first paragraph of your body text.
As shown above, the Focus Keyword “Rank Math SEO” is present in this first paragraph! consequently, you will see this second checklist item turn Green.
Focus Keyword in the URL
The next item checks whether the Focus Keyword you selected is included in the URL.
Focus Keyword not found in the URL.
Focus Keyword used in the URL.
In Rank Math, there is a section called “Permalink” where you can set the specific URL for each blog post.
Focus Keyword in Introduction
This item checks whether the keyword appears at the very beginning of your content.
Focus Keyword doesn’t appear at the beginning of your content.
Focus Keyword appears in the first 10% of the content.
Rank Math scans the first 10% of your post to see if the Focus Keyword is present. In other words, it asks: “Is the main topic mentioned right away?”
💡 Solution: simply write your Focus Keyword in the first paragraph! This will immediately turn the light green.
Focus Keyword in Content
This is arguably the easiest requirement to satisfy. It simply checks if the Focus Keyword exists anywhere within the entire post.
Focus Keyword not found in your content.
Focus Keyword found in the content.
Since we already included the keyword in the introduction (as per the previous step), this item will automatically turn green. So, no further explanation is needed!
Content Length Check
This item checks if your content exceeds 600 words. Personally, I don’t think you need to obsess over satisfying this requirement.
⚠️ Important: Please avoid “fluff” or artificially lengthening your sentences just to fill this bar. Quality matters more than quantity.
Content is [x] words long. Consider using at least 600 words.
Content is 2500 words long. Good job!
To be honest, I rarely get a perfect green check on this item. I tested it specifically while writing this post:
| Body length | Check results |
|---|---|
| 0 to 600 words | Red X |
| 600 to 1500 words | Orange empty check |
| 1500 to 2500 words | Green empty check |
| 2500 words or more | Green filled check |
Achieving 2,500 words means you are essentially writing a comprehensive report covering every single aspect of a topic. For reference, the post has the words about 3300 words long.
Additional SEO Errors
The Additional SEO section consists of the following 8 specific checkpoints:
- Focus Keyword in Subheadings
- Focus Keyword in Image Alt Attributes
- Keyword Density
- URL Length
- External Links & DoFollow Links
- Internal Links
- Focus Keyword Uniqueness
- Content AI
Now, let’s examine each of these items in detail.
Using the Focus Keyword in Subheaders
Rank Math checks if your keywords appear in the structure of your content. You get a pass if the Focus Keyword is found in just one of your H2, H3, or H4 titles.
My Tip: I typically insert the keyword into the first H2 heading to satisfy this requirement easily.
Focus Keyword not found in subheadings like H2, H3, H4, etc.
Focus Keyword found in the subheadings.

Focus Keyword in Image Alt Text
Images have an attribute known as “Alt Text” (Alternative Text). This item checks whether your Focus Keyword has been included in this Alt Text.
Alt Text refers to the text that displays in place of an image if it fails to load on the screen. However, it is surprisingly important for another reason: visually impaired users rely on screen readers to browse the internet.
Add an image with your Focus Keyword as alt text.
Focus Keyword found in image alt attribute(s).
Think of it as describing the content of the image to visually impaired users instead of showing them the visual. It makes perfect sense that websites demonstrating such detailed care and accessibility would secure top positions in search rankings.
How to Add Alt Text: As shown in the image below, when you select an image in the editor, you will see an “Alt Text (Alternative Text)” field in the right-hand menu. Simply enter a description that includes your Focus Keyword in this field.
Keyword Density
Keyword Density evaluates how frequently your Focus Keyword is repeated throughout the body text. This is calculated automatically in real-time.
Typically, a density between 1% and 1.5% triggers the Green Light. It shouldn’t be too low, nor should it be too high (keyword stuffing). You need to maintain a “just right” balance.
Keyword Density is [x.xx] which is low; the Focus Keyword and combination appears [xx] times.
Keyword Density is [0.xx]; the Focus Keyword and combination appears [xx] times.
URL length
This item checks the character count of your post’s URL.
The URL is xx characters long. Please consider shortening it.
The URL is xx characters long. Kudos!
If a URL is too long, it is generally not considered SEO-friendly. A URL should be concise enough to convey the post’s topic at a glance.
According to Rank Math’s official documentation—based on actual website ranking data—URLs that are 75 characters or shorter are considered “Good.”
External Links & DoFollow Links
This item checks whether your content includes hyperlinks pointing to external websites (other web pages).
Link out to external resources
Great! You’re linking to an external resource.
While linking to external sources is good, I strongly recommend linking only to credible and trustworthy materials. Adding too many links is not necessarily better. In fact, indiscriminate linking can negatively affect your blog’s SEO.
Additionally, you can control the link type (attribute) when adding external links. The default setting in WordPress is DoFollow, so you usually don’t need to worry about it. Once you add a standard link to an outside site, the light will turn green as shown below:
Add DoFollow links to external resources.
At least one external link with DoFollow found in your content.

Internal Links
Add internal links to your content.
You are linking to other resources on your website which is great.
This checks if your post includes hyperlinks pointing to other articles within your own blog. Personally, I feel many people overlook this item, but I believe it is arguably the most crucial one. Ask yourself: “Does my blog have a sophisticated web of internal links?”
💰 Pro Tip (AdSense Strategy): When linking to your other posts, make sure to set them to open in the Same Tab (Self), not a New Tab! This significantly increases the chances of displaying full-screen ads (vignette ads) to your visitors as they navigate.
Focus Keyword Usage (Uniqueness)
You have used this Focus Keyword before.
You haven’t used this Focus Keyword before.
This item checks your post history to ensure you haven’t already written a post using the specific Focus Keyword you are currently setting.
Content AI Usage
Use Content AI to optimise the Post.
This is a feature Rank Math has been aggressively promoting recently, but personally, I don’t find it necessary. Feel free to ignore it.
However, if anyone has seen a ranking boost or significant results (enough to justify the cost) after using it, please let me know in the comments!
Title readability
The Title Readability section consists of the following 2 items:
- Use focus keyword before title or not
- Whether to include numbers in SEO titles
Now, let’s look at each item individually.
Focus Keyword at the Start of Title
This item checks whether your chosen Focus Keyword is positioned right at the beginning of your post title.
Focus Keyword doesn’t appear at the beginning of SEO title.
Focus Keyword used at the beginning of SEO title.
For instance, the Focus Keyword set for this post is “Rank Math SEO”.
Naturally, this keyword must be included in the title, right? My original idea for the title was actually as follows:
"The 2026 Beginner's Roadmap to Google Rankings: Rank Math SEO Ultimate Guide"
However, with this structure, the keyword Rank Math SEO is positioned relatively late in the title. So, I rearranged it to bring the keyword to the front, resulting in the current version:
"Rank Math SEO Ultimate Guide: The 2026 Beginner's Roadmap to Google Rankings"
Number in Title
This item checks whether your title includes a number. Rank Math believes that titles with numbers tend to stand out more to potential readers.
Your SEO title doesn’t contain a number.
You are using a number in your SEO title.
In my case, I usually include phrases like “2026 Latest” or “Top 5 Recommendations” to naturally incorporate numbers.
For this post specifically, I included “2026 Latest Guide” in the title. 🙂
💡 Solution: Naturally include a number (year, quantity, etc.) in your title.
Content Readability
The Content Readability section consists of the following 3 items:
- Use of a Table of Contents
- Use of Short Paragraphs
- Use of Images and Videos
Let’s break down each one.
Table of Contents (ToC) Usage
This checks if you have inserted a Table of Contents at the beginning of your post to map out the overall structure.
Use a table of contents to break down the text.
You seem to be using a Table of Contents plugin to break-down your text.
Many people seem to use separate plugins for this. However, I personally dislike installing a heavy plugin just for a simple ToC function.
That’s why in the ALL100 theme, I configured it so you can insert a ToC simply by typing a slash ( / ). Users of the ALL100 theme, please take note!
💡 Solution: Insert a Table of Contents into your post.
Short Paragraph Usage
This item checks if your content is composed of short, digestible paragraphs (“short breath”).
At least one paragraph is long. Consider using short paragraphs.
You’re using short paragraphs.
If your document consists of massive walls of text, readability drops significantly. Plus, there won’t be any space to insert ads, right?
💡 Solution: Use the “Enter” key frequently to ensure no paragraph exceeds 120 words.
Images & Video Usage
This checks if you have inserted any rich media like images or videos.
You are not using rich media like images or videos.
Your content contains images and/or video(s).
This is a relatively easy item to satisfy since you just need to insert at least one image or video in the body.
💡 Solution: Insert an image or video into your content.
By the way, you do know the proper way to insert images in WordPress to optimize site speed, right? 🙂
How to Fix the PHP MBstring Error in Rank Math
Recently, I have received frequent comments from users—especially those who installed WordPress on ChemiCloud—reporting that they cannot connect their Rank Math account due to an error.
The error message usually indicates a missing PHP extension. I have investigated the issue, and here is the solution to fix it.
How to Fix the Issue via cPanel
Go to your cPanel dashboard and look for the “Select PHP Version” tool under the Software section.
- Select cPanel > Tools > Software > Select PHP Version
Find the mbstring option as shown in the image below and check the box to enable it.
After reconfiguring the Rank Math plugin, it should connect without any errors.
Conclusion
We’ve reached the end of a very long guide. I put a lot of effort into writing this because I felt it was a necessary resource for my readers.
I am committed to keeping this post updated to ensure it remains the most complete guide available. Wishing you success in your online business!
