How to Double Revenue with Custom Full-Screen Ads (Strategy and Implementation)
Many people seem curious about how to increase AdSense revenue using popups, so I took a look into it. I will implement a popup using Kadence Conversions and share insights on how to increase AdSense revenue through this method, along with a practical example. 🙂
AdSense Revenue and Popups
An important part of AdSense revenue that cannot be ignored is the interstitial (full-screen) ads. Since interstitial ads cover the entire screen, their cost-per-click (CPC) tends to be higher. Therefore, the more often you show high-CPC interstitial ads, the higher your revenue will be.
Examples of Popups That Encourage Clicks
The reason popups work well for displaying interstitial ads is that the blogger has control over when to show them. For an interstitial ad to appear, the visitor must click a link. However, many readers do not actively click links.
Popups are different. Bloggers can proactively display them to readers! For example, here is the popup ad currently used on WPlaybook. This ad appears regardless of the visitor’s intention. As a side note, the trigger is when the visitor attempts to leave the blog. It’s like grabbing their pant leg to stop them from leaving. Haha.
- Also, the popup can only be closed by clicking the close button at the top. If you click “View Original Post,” the current article will reappear and the popup will come up again—an endless loop!
As you’ve seen firsthand, popups are a tool with a lot of potential. Let’s explore a few reasons why using popups can maximize your blog’s monetization.
High Visibility and Click-Through Rates
Since popups appear in the center of the screen, they instantly capture the reader’s attention. This leads to higher click-through rates on the ads or messages included in the popup. For example, clicking the “Read More” button (especially the left button in the popup) often triggers an interstitial ad, which can significantly increase AdSense revenue.
What if you display such popups on posts targeting keywords like “AdSense approval”? Who wouldn’t click…?

In other words, popups that deliver special promotions, discounts, or important announcements—things users care about—can be very effective.
Encouraging User Actions
Popups can directly encourage clicks. Sometimes users click the “Read More” button because they genuinely want to, but other times they click even if they don’t want to—almost compelled to do so. This helps trigger interstitial ads and increases revenue.
Kadence Conversions Plugin
Kadence offers a premium plugin called Kadence Conversions. The popup we looked at earlier was created using this Conversions plugin. This plugin’s features can be broadly categorized into two main functions.
- Automatically launch pop-ups (Automatic Triggers)
- You can display customized popups. (Display Conditions)
Automatic Triggers
First, you can set the timing for popups to automatically appear based on specific visitor behaviors. Here are some of the available trigger conditions:
- On exit intent: When a user is about to leave the page.
- On page load (On page load): When the page is loaded.
- After x amount of seconds: Show the popup after the specified amount of time has passed.
- After distance scrolled: Show a popup after the user has scrolled the page a certain distance.
- Upon reaching the end of content: Display a popup when the user reaches the end of the page.
- When user clicks on a link (By user click on anything with a custom link): Show a popup when a user clicks a specific link.
There are quite a lot, right? By using these options to finely design your blog, you can generate a lot of full-screen ads.
Display Conditions
Also, you’re not limited to showing just one popup automatically. Depending on the visitor’s interests, you can display multiple different popups. More specifically, you can customize popups per post or broadly by category. Here are some of the available display conditions:
- All pages/posts: Show the popup on all pages or posts
- Specific selected pages/posts: Show popup on specific selected pages or posts
- Pages/posts by taxonomies/author: Popup by taxonomy or author
- By logged out or current user role: Show popups based on logged out users or specific user roles.
- By user device: Show popups based on user device
- By user domain referral: Show popups based on the domain the user visited
- After x number of page views: Show a popup after the user has viewed a specified number of pages.
- By URL query parameter: Show popup based on specific URL query parameters
- By custom cookie: Show popups based on specific cookies
- By date schedule – Range: Show popups during a specific date range
- By date schedule – Recurring (By date schedule – Recurring): Show popups based on a recurring date schedule
- By language (WPML & Polylang): Show popup based on specific language settings
- By product in cart (By product in cart (Woocommerce)): Popup when a specific product is in the cart.
- Based on total price in cart (By total price in cart (Woocommerce)): Show popup based on total price in cart
By utilizing these features, you can effectively configure popups tailored to various situations on your blog.
Precautions When Using Pop-ups on AdSense Blogs
To effectively use pop-ups on blogs that utilize Google AdSense, t here are several important precautions that must be followed. These are to comply with AdSense policies, optimize user experience, and maintain site safety.
1. Limit on Number of Pop-ups
- Limit to 3 or fewer: The number of pop-ups displayed on the site should not exceed three. Exceeding this limit violates AdSense policies and may result in suspension of ad serving.
2. Respect for User Experience
- Do not interfere with site navigation: Pop-ups must not obstruct users from navigating the site. The position and size of pop-ups should be adjusted so users can move between pages and browse content comfortably.
- No changes to user settings: Pop-ups must not alter user settings, such as changing browser configurations or homepage settings.
- No automatic downloads: Files must not start downloading automatically through pop-ups.
- No virus distribution: Pop-ups must not be used to distribute viruses or malware.
3. No Pop-under Ads
- Pop-under ads prohibited: Sites that use pop-under ads (pop-ups that open behind the current window) are not allowed to serve Google AdSense ads. Pop-unders cause user inconvenience and should be avoided.
4. No Software Triggers
- Software-triggered pop-ups prohibited: Sites with AdSense ads must not load pop-ups triggered by software, such as those that change browser settings or redirect users to unwanted sites.
5. Third-Party Traffic Management
- Managing ad networks and affiliates: When other ad networks or affiliates direct traffic to your site, you must ensure that pop-ups are not triggered in ways that disrupt user experience. Be careful that traffic entering pages with AdSense code is not generated through such disruptive methods.
6. Proper Use of Pop-ups
Does Google dislike pop-ups altogether? Not necessarily. They allow pop-ups that are relevant to the content, under these conditions:
- Providing relevant content: The pop-up should offer information highly relevant to the user’s interests. Unnecessary ads or unrelated content can harm user experience.
- Clear close button: Pop-ups must have a clear and easy-to-find close button so users can close them whenever they want.
By following these precautions, you can use pop-ups effectively without violating AdSense policies, potentially increasing your AdSense earnings more than before. 🙂
