3 Tips for Choosing a Profitable Blog Niche (Beginner Must-Read)
Hello, this is WPlaybook, dedicated to researching online monetization.
As we’ve been running our blog setup service lately, we’ve met many people starting their blogging journey — and a common struggle we’ve noticed is choosing the right blog topic.
Today, let’s look at how to choose a blog niche that’s truly profitable.
Choosing the Right Blog Niche
What does it really mean to run a blog? Among the many functions a blog serves, the most important one, without a doubt, is “information delivery.” That’s because the primary reason people visit blogs is to search for and gain information.
If you’re just starting out, there’s one fundamental sentence you need to keep firmly in your mind:
What needs does my blog fulfill for people?
While keeping this sentence in mind, let’s move on to define the theme of your blog. When we watch YouTube videos or read blog posts, there’s always a reason behind it. The medium satisfies a particular need or desire within us. According to psychologist Abraham Maslow, human desires can be categorized into five distinct needs:
- Physiological needs – basic needs for survival, such as food, water, breath, sleep, sex, etc.
- Safety needs – a desire for safety, whether physical, employment, health, or property.
- Love and Belonging needs – the desire for emotional connection with friends, family, and romantic partners.
- Esteem needs – the desire to be recognized by oneself and others, including confidence, respect, accomplishment, and importance.
- Self-actualization needs – the desire to reach one’s full potential and realize one’s own goals.
Abraham Maslow suggests that the desires further down his hierarchy are more advanced. In other words, we pursue the higher desires only once the lower ones are satisfied, much like the idea of “self-cultivation before ruling the country.”
Why bring up these desires? Because the blog we will create must fulfill one of these desires. The fact that the lower desires are basic means that, from a blogger’s perspective, these topics are the ones that generate the most traffic.
- Food, sex
Food and sex are among the most fundamental human desires. Reflecting this, traffic related to these topics is incredibly high. For instance, the world’s largest adult website, Pornhub, has a monthly visitor count of 12 billion. To put that in perspective, after Google, YouTube, and Facebook, Pornhub has the highest number of visitors among all websites globally. (A lot of love on Earth…)
One of the famous food-related websites, Man’s Recipe, had 13 million visitors in December 2023 alone. The closer we get to basic needs, the more traffic there will be, but conversely, the competition becomes fiercer. This means that there are many blogs out there, and our blog must stand out and survive in this competitive environment.

Once you’ve chosen the area that resonates with you, it’s time to define your blog topic. Choosing the right topic is crucial for easier blog management going forward. Take your time, invest a day or so, and carefully think through your decision.
Step 1 in Choosing a Blog Topic – Who Am I?

The most basic action in running a blog is writing posts. You need to consistently publish high-quality articles. So, the most important first step in selecting a blog topic is to reflect on and understand yourself.
- What do I like?
- What am I good at?
- What products do I use?
- What services do I use?
- Is there a particular problem situation I’ve encountered?
- Where do I live?
Think carefully about the above questions. It might be helpful to write them down. The most important element in blog writing is the knowledge or experience you have in the specific field. What you should focus on here is not the expertise, but the experience.

Example 1: Local Area Review Blog
Anyone can write about their local area, as it’s a unique experience that everyone has. For instance, you can write about the best local restaurants or travel destinations, adding your personal touch and experiences. The more familiar the topic, the easier it is to create content with your own style.
Example 2: Remote Work Blog
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, many people have started working from home. You may have faced challenges while working remotely and found solutions to these problems. These personal experiences can be used to create content for a blog on remote work.
Example 3: Yoga Blog
Some people might run a blog based on their daily yoga practice and the lessons they’ve learned. Since it’s something you love and engage with daily, it’s easier to write about and identify the types of content that are needed.
Blog Topic Selection Step 2 – Add a Concept
At WPlaybook, we provide free WordPress blog setup services. This naturally gives us the opportunity to have personal conversations with about two clients a day, and a common issue we see with those just starting out is that their blog topics often feel vague.
While they may have chosen a blog category, the specific topic still feels undefined. If you incorporate your personal story into the blog category you’ve selected, I believe it will help you define a more unique blog topic.
Example 1: Travel Blog
One of the most popular types of blogs people want to start is a travel blog. Traveling to various places can also lead to monetization. However, instead of just posting general travel blogs or reviews, you can mix in a concept that aligns with your own experience, as we discussed earlier.
- Solo travel blog
- Family Travel Blog
- Couples Travel Blog
For example, if you’re writing about the same travel destination, your blog posts will naturally include information that matches your concept. If you’re writing about hotels around a tourist spot, a hotel suitable for couples will be different from one that’s ideal for families. By adding this personal concept, your blog becomes more unique and appealing to specific audiences.
In other words, create a segmented (distinctive) blog that puts your own color on the big topic of travel.
Example 2: Yoga Blog
Let’s think about the yoga blog example I mentioned earlier. Even with a yoga blog, it’s better to add something personal that reflects your own journey. Perhaps yoga has changed your life—maybe you lost weight, or your health markers improved (such as blood pressure or cholesterol levels). Or, if you’ve worked hard to earn a yoga certification or have already earned one, these can be used to add uniqueness and depth to your blog.

Monetization Considerations When Setting a Blog Topic
Lastly, our goal is to make money using our blog. Therefore, the most important question you should ask yourself when setting your blog topic is: “What do I want to sell through this blog?”
AdSense Monetization Method
The easiest way to monetize a blog is through AdSense, which generates revenue through ads! Many bloggers in the WPlaybook community have already succeeded in monetizing with AdSense. You should check it out!
Also, after choosing your blog topic, you’ll need to prepare for AdSense approval. I highly recommend reading the following article, which contains the know-how of iM Play, who created 6 blogs in one month and got 5 AdSense approvals.
Affiliate marketing methods
When it comes to ultimate blog monetization, affiliate marketing, online courses, community building, and sponsorships can be key strategies. One of the most important things to consider at this stage is how to tie high-revenue affiliate opportunities into your blog. Let’s look at an example.
Example 1: Book review blog
Even if you love reading and start a book review blog, monetizing solely through book reviews can be very difficult. Of course, through affiliate marketing, you can promote new books and earn affiliate income from the books you recommend.
However, considering that affiliate commissions for most products are often less than 10% of the sale price, monetizing a blog through book affiliate marketing alone is not enough. So does that mean book review bloggers shouldn’t monetize this way? Not necessarily.
For book review bloggers to succeed in monetizing, they could focus on recommending e-readers (like Kindle) through affiliate links, or creating a paid reading club. The commission from e-readers is much higher than that from book sales, given that e-readers are priced significantly higher. Additionally, creating a paid reading club could also generate significantly higher income per transaction compared to book affiliate marketing. Thus, this would be a much more effective monetization strategy.
Example 2: Sports-Related Blogs
Sports-related blogs, such as those focusing on basketball, soccer, baseball, or golf, typically write about how to improve in these sports, share tips, or provide news and updates about professional athletes and games. These kinds of blogs can generate traffic by covering game news and player performances, and you can monetize this traffic through advertising.
However, for sports blogs, I believe the key to successful monetization is integrating product reviews related to the specific sport. For example, a basketball blog could link to product reviews like “Best Basketball Shoes for Beginners” or “Top Performance Basketball Shoes for Experts.” By increasing traffic with news articles and then naturally guiding visitors to product recommendations, you can generate revenue through affiliate marketing.
In particular, sports products like golf equipment can be pricey, which makes monetization easier for those who write about sports with expensive equipment. The more expensive the items, the higher the affiliate commissions, making it easier to earn significant income.
Conclusion
That’s it for the points you should consider when choosing a monetizable blog topic. I hope my article helps guide you through the difficult process of blog topic selection. Take some time to think it through carefully, and make a wise decision. See you in the initial setup phase!
